A quick reply to some Qur’anic verses used to 'disprove' the flat earth

Updated: Nov 5, 2020

***OBJECTION***

Allah says in the following verses;

[21:34] And He it is Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, each gliding along in its orbit.

[31:30] Hast thou not seen that Allah makes the night pass into the day, and makes the day pass into the night, and He has pressed the sun and the moon into service; each pursuing its course till an appointed term, and that Allah is well aware of what you do?

Merging here means that the night slowly and gradually changes to day and vice versa. This phenomenon can only take place if the earth is spherical. If the earth was flat, there would have been a sudden change from night to day and from day to night.

Then he following verse also alludes to the spherical shape of the earth:

[39:6] He created the heavens and the earth in accordance with the requirements of wisdom. He makes the night to cover the day, and He makes the day to cover the night; and He has pressed the sun and the moon into service; each pursues its course until an appointed time. Hearken; it is He alone Who is the Mighty, the Great Forgiver.

The Arabic word used here is Kawwara meaning ‘to overlap’ or ‘to coil’– the way a turban is wound around the head. The overlapping or coiling of the day and night can only take place if the earth is spherical.

The Quran says that the overlapping of the night and the day makes a ball (sphere). Here also the Quran is referring to ALL MOVING: not only the sun and moon but also Earth. Because in Arabic grammar there is difference between the singular (one), binary (two) and plural (three or more). The reference to binary is “Kulahuma Yajreean كلاهما يجريان” however the Quran said “Kullon yajree كل يجري” referring to the plural (three or more). Since the sun and moon are just two but the Quran refers to three or more then according to the Quran all three move: sun, moon and Earth.

Summary

The Qur’an is not a book of science but a book of ‘signs’, i.e. ayat. There are more than six thousand verses, ‘signs’ in the Qur’an of which about 750 deals with science and knowledge.

The above discussion has proved that not only the Qur’an did not mention earth as flat but it declared the earth as round and sphere in so many verses.

(the above is a message received, I have copy and pasted it as it is)

***ANSWER ***

1. It's not necessary for it to be a globe in order that the day and night slowly comes, as the moon and sun is moving on an orbit (just like you mentioned in the verse). The sun & moon in the Flat earth model are close to earth and are roughly the same size.

2. Don't see how the sun overlaps the earth when science says the the earth is moving around the sun not vice versa so you have to at least believe in the geocentric model being the model of the cosmos from Qur'an, also in the flat earth model the sun goes in towards the north pole (middle) in summer and gradually moves outward to the south in winter hence the seasons. Just like a turban is first wrapped closer to the head then gradually comes out.

3. The point about the grammar of the Ayat i.e, the words كلاهما يجريان should be used not كل يجري .The staring of that Verse it mentions the 'heavens', no mentioning of the earth so to say the plurality is including the earth also is absurd yes what we can say is that as the heavens are mentioned we can say that it is what is in the heavens that are moving. As we know the first heaven is adorned with stars (Surah Mulk) so here its referring to the starts as we can perceive also that stars are moving as well as the sun and the moon around us.

There is no alluding to a globe here as there not even mentioning of the earth.

There are no Ayaat that give any sort of meaning of roundness, just bring one. When there are several that allude to the flat earth model (wide expanse, layed out the earth, spread the earth, expanded the earth etc).
